Quick answer: Invisalign treatment time depends on how far the teeth need to move and how consistently the aligners are worn. Aligners must be worn around 22 hours a day, removed only for eating and cleaning. Wearing them less is the most common reason treatment runs longer than planned.

What determines the timeline

How much movement is needed

Closing a small gap or correcting one rotated tooth is a very different proposition from resolving significant crowding or a bite discrepancy. The distance teeth have to travel, and the type of movement required, are the largest factors.

How consistently you wear them

This is the one you control. Invisalign aligners are designed to be worn around 22 hours a day. Taking them out for long stretches does not simply pause progress — teeth begin to drift back, so the next aligner in the series no longer fits properly and the sequence has to be repeated.

Your biology

Bone remodels at different rates in different people. Two patients with identical starting positions and identical compliance can still finish at different times.

What a typical course looks like

After an examination and records, a digital treatment plan is produced showing the intended sequence of movements. You then receive a series of aligners, each worn for a set period before moving to the next. Check-in appointments happen periodically to confirm the teeth are tracking to plan.

Small tooth-coloured attachments are often bonded to certain teeth to give the aligners something to grip, which allows movements that would otherwise not be possible.

Retention: the part people forget

Teeth do not simply stay where they are put. Once active treatment finishes, a retainer holds the result. Skipping retainers is the single most common reason people find their teeth have shifted again a few years later. Retention is not an optional extra at the end; it is part of the treatment.

Invisalign compared with fixed braces

Aligners are removable, which makes eating and cleaning easier, and they are far less visible. Fixed braces remove the compliance question entirely and can be more predictable for certain complex movements. Our detailed comparison is on Invisalign vs braces.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours a day do I have to wear my aligners?

Around 22 hours a day. They are removed for eating, for drinking anything other than water, and for brushing and flossing. Consistent wear is the single biggest factor in finishing on schedule.

What happens if I do not wear my aligners enough?

Teeth begin to drift back towards their previous positions, so the next aligner in the series no longer fits correctly. Treatment then takes longer, and sometimes a stage has to be repeated or new aligners made.

Does Invisalign hurt?

Most patients describe pressure or tightness for a day or two after changing to a new aligner rather than pain. That sensation is the teeth moving, and it settles as the aligner does its work.

Will I need a retainer afterwards?

Yes. Teeth naturally tend to drift back after orthodontic treatment. A retainer holds the result, and not wearing it is the most common reason people find their teeth have shifted again years later.

Can I eat with my aligners in?

No. Aligners are removed for eating and for any drink other than water. This protects them from staining and damage, and prevents food being held against the teeth.
